So that’s us, Naomi on the left and Sharon on the right, together with our precious mother Miriam we created Afrorage.
When you look at any label that comes with the cosmetics on our shelves, do you understand them and do you know exactly what is going into your hair, skin or on your face? Or like us, does your tongue twist and head ache, trying to pronounce the chemicals and preservatives listed as ingredients? In a world where almost everything comes with a side dish of chemicals, it is a brave soul that goes against the grain and seeks to be natural in an unnatural world, and that looks for products and a way of life to suits these needs. It has become nothing less than a ‘mini-mission’ to find these products, and if you do, it is not always guaranteed that you will get what you are looking for. It was for this reason that Afrorage was created. Afrorage aims to create alternatives to the use of products that are full of preservatives, and provide a natural, more safer alternative.
We started with our hair. As we are all natural haired women in the family, it made sense to make a product that would be suited to our needs; and this is why we created our Afrorage Coconut Hair Butter. Finding the right product for natural hair that does not contain an arm long list of preservatives or other moisture stripping substances can be a very daunting process for people, and we wanted to eliminate this problem by not only making products that contain natural ingredients, but that also catered to the specific needs of African women’s hair; adding the necessary moisture and softness to the hair without resulting in breakage and dryness. This moisture rich butter contains Shea Butter, a Coconut Oil Blend and Essential Oil blend; it is a great moisturiser, a great hair softener and seals in moisture.
This is also why we created our nourishing Afrorage Coconut Hair Massage Oil. Our products are solely handmade and go through an intense testing and experimenting phase to make sure that they have no adverse effects on the user, both in and out of the lab. We also chose the most beneficial natural ingredients to include in our recipes. This hair massage oil contains Sweet Almond oil Blend and an Essential Oil Blend, and prevents scalp problems and aids in hair growth.
It is the same for the skin. I personally (Sharon) have been through ten years of changing what I wash my face with. Short of peeling the skin off my face like a low budget horror movie monster to get rid of my acne, I have spent thousands of dollars on three step programs, have drank 16 pills a day prescribed by holistic healers, and almost tried laser therapy, all in search of perfect, glowing skin. So I decided to try something natural; African Black Soap. Black soap is traditionally made by hand in Africa, and the majority of the soap contains coconut oil, palm oil, palm kernel oil, Shea and Cocoa butter. The soap also contains ashes of the Shea tree bark, banana tree, cocoa pods and plantain leaves, and of course water. This soap is an excellent cleanser and is used to clarify the skin, removing scars, skin irritations and diseases, removing oily build-up and make-up. With the wondrous success of this soap on our skin, Afrorage now offers this as part of its natural product range to customers in Namibia.
As for products that can be used as all rounders, we also offer raw honey. Some natural enthusiasts might know that honey is an ‘all-rounder’; it can be used for the kitchen, the hair, and the skin, and what we package is good for all three; and again, is free from the refining process, providing you with its raw nutrition.
